Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is the process of walking with a spiritual director as together you explore your life and faith.  In the midst of a busy life, many people find it difficult to notice God’s action in their daily affairs.  Yet, at the deepest level, most of us long for a more conscious experience of God’s presence and love.

It is the privilege and responsibility of a spiritual director to journey with you as you deepen your relationship with God.  The journey takes place in the context of confidential one-to-one sessions.  These sessions are usually for one hour every four or five weeks, and you have the opportunity to reflect deeply on the experiences of your daily life.  It is really not about being ‘directed’ so much as being encouraged to draw closer to God – discovering that God has been waiting for you to seek this closer relationship.

Seeking Spiritual Direction:

You might come to spiritual direction for a variety of reasons, including to…

  • Identify and trust your own experiences of God
  • Integrate spirituality into your daily life
  • Discern and make difficult choices
  • Share your hopes, struggles and losses
  • Develop a sensitivity for justice and concern for the poor
  • Live the essence of your church membership with integrity

Meeting with a Director:

Spiritual directors have training and formation for this ministry.  They also continue to receive direction for themselves as well as participate in supervision of their ministry of direction.

You and your director will agree on an appropriate location and time to meet.  After three or four sessions, you will have the opportunity to evaluate the relationship.  Whether your relationship continues for many years or for only a short time, it is very important to be comfortable with the director you choose.

Rev’d Libby Gilchrist is an associate priest in the parish of Sorrento/Rye. She has completed the four year formation programme for spiritual directors run by the Living Well Centre, based at St George’s Anglican Parish in Malvern, and is accredited by the Anglican diocese of Melbourne as a Spiritual Director.  She is available to chat with those who might be interested to explore this most interesting field of spiritual growth, and to offer direction to those who would like to participate further.
